Taekwondo Club Etiquette
1.General etiquette
When going onto or leaving the mat, it is expected for one to bow.
It is expected to get an instructor’s permission before going onto or leaving the mat during practice
If one is participating in practice, they are expected to participate with the plans that the instructor teaches for that class
I.e. One should not use kicking bags during practice if the instructor has not instructed people to do so, unless permitted otherwise.
One should not be practicing poomsae/using equipment in the room during a sparring class, or practice sparring/using the kicking bag in the room during practice. One can practice different techniques in the lobby of the practice room or ask the instructor if they can use the secondary mats in the practice room.
One is expected to wear their belt to practice
1. If one does not have a belt they should speak toan officer to receive one.
If at any time during practice one needs to readjust their belt or uniform, they must be sure to turn away from the instructor.
2.Coming into practice
If one comes into practice before the scheduled time, they may stretch on the mat or practice some techniques, but must stop immediately when the instructor starts practice.
When the instructor calls for lines at the beginning of practice, it is always expected for there to be 5 rows from highest belt to lowest belt.
1. If one does not bring their belt to practice, they are expected to line up at the end of the line.
The highest belt is expected to bow the class into practice with the phrase “kyo-soemnim ke kyongre” (kyo-sum-nim kay kyoung-nay)
All members are expected to bow and greet the instructor with the phrase “annyeong hashimnikka” (ahn-yung ha-shim nee-ka)
3.Showing up late to practice
If one shows up late to practice, they should wait beside the mat until they are acknowledged by the instructor and allowed to come onto the mat.
4. Behavior during class
Display the appropriate amount of respect asked by an
instructor
If one instructor expects members to say “yes
ma’am/sir” after receiving instruction, then one
should give that reply after instruction.
If another instructor does not require members to
say “yes ma’am/sir” after instructor, then members
do not have to give a reply after instruction.
Be sure to ask an instructor before leaving the mat
during an activity
1. This rule can be omitted in the case of a medicalemergency, injury, or any other type of emergency.
5.Ending practice
Members are expected to line up in the same 5 rows from highest to lowest belt. Members who arrived late will line up in the back regardless of belt rank.
The highest belt is expected to bow the class out of practice with the phrase “kyo-soemnim ke kyongre” (kyo-sum-nim kay kyoung-nay)
All members are expected to bow and thank the instructor with the phrase “kamsahamnida” (kam-sah- ham-nee-dah)
6.Attire during semi-professional events
One is expected to wear a belt and dobok during semi- professinoal events
Such events include belt tests, in-house tournaments, and seminars given by instructors from other schools
Dress code/attire will be announced before the event.
7.Cleaning up
If one borrows equipment from the club (i.e.sparring gear), they should be sure to clean it using the club- provided wipes and spray
After practice, everyone is expected to help clean the room, most importantly, mats. If there is spray or a mop not being used. Someone should be helping.
